Fanboys is a film directed by Kyle Newman and starring Sam Huntington, Chris Marquette, Dan Fogler, Jay Baruchel, and Kristen Bell. It was released on February 6, 2009.
PLOT:
Set in 1998, the story tells of a group of friends who, eager for the premiere of Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace - and because one of them is suffering from cancer and wishes to see the film before his death - decide to break into Skywalker Ranch and steal an early print of the film.
They travel across the country and on their way they encounter William Shatner, obsessed Trekkies, and bikers who make them undress for water.
PRODUCTION:
The majority of school scenes were shot in Toronto, Ontario, on the school campuses of Western Technical Commercial School and Ursula Franklin Academy. While many of the hallway scenes were shot in the Ursula Franklin section of the building, the boys' lavatory that is used as Charlie's office is one of Western Technical Commercial School's.
Also, the student lounge from the movie does not exist and was constructed and demolished specifically for the shooting of this movie.
Many of the interior and exterior scenes taking place at the Bartlett Estate were shot in Oshawa, Ontario, at the Parkwood Estate. Parkwood has played home to various well-off movie characters, including the likes of Billy Madison.
DEVELOPMENT:
After George Lucas was given an advanced screening of the rough cut of the film, he enjoyed it and gave it his "stamp of approval" and even offered the original Star Wars sound effects for use in the movie.
Filmmaker and Star Wars fan Kevin Smith also viewed an early version of the film and asked for (and was given) a cameo in the film.
The film was originally to be released on August 17, 2007. The movie was pushed back once more to January 2008 because director Kyle Newman was given more funding to shoot additional scenes that the original budget did not include.
Getting the cast back together would only be possible in September 2007, thus the movie's release date had to be moved to 2008.
The movie was again pushed back because the reshoots could not take place before November/December 2007. These reshoots were directed by Steven Brill and not by Kyle Newman.
On January 14, web blogger The CineManiac broke the story that the movie was being re-edited to remove the cancer plot from the movie and replace much of it with raunchy, vulgar humor.
Ain't It Cool News picked up the story and confirmed that the two different versions of the movie (with and without the cancer plot) were screened to different test audiences in Burbank, CA, in January 2008 to see which one would rate higher.
As for a new release date, Director Kyle Newman stated in a Movie Geeks United! interview that the movie would hopefully come out in April 2008.
Upon hearing about the changes being made to the movie, dedicated Star Wars fans united and started an internet campaign where fans rebel against the plot changes and demand that the original version that includes the cancer storyline be released in theaters.
Steven Brill retaliated in a derogatory manner, calling fans "losers" in online correspondence oublah which ended up in the public domain.
In one exchange, Brill called a fan "dumb" and threatened to "hunt him down" in a profanity-laden emailed response to a letter of complaint. In a recent interview Newman chastised Brill's behavior saying:
"If you're going to go in and recut someone's film even though you're not even a fan of the subject matter, just because you want a paycheck, you're not passionate about it, then do that. But don't go opening your mouth and alienating the core audience of that movie.
I just thought that was the most low class thing that you could do, especially considering there are so many people that worked years and years and years on this."
A rough cut of the full film (that included the cancer storyline) was shown in public for the first time at Star Wars Celebration Europe on July 14, 2007.
The screening was followed by a Q&A session with director Kyle Newman and received standing ovations.
On July 9, 2008, director Kyle Newman confirmed in a TheForce.net interview that the cancer plot will be included in the final cut of the movie.
"The motivation was stripped out of the movie so it was more like, 'Hey, we're drunk. You wanna go break into Skywalker ranch?'" said Newman of the altered version.
"It ultimately didn't work and that's why it, I think, came back to us, the original team to at least restore it as much as we could in the time given." Newman was given just 36 hour to reassemble his film, and edit back in the key motivational cancer plot line.
The final cut of the film was screened on July 24, 2008, in San Diego at Comic-Con.
It was announced there that Fanboys would be released to theaters on September 19, 2008. On Sep 4, 2008 a new release date was announced: November 26, 2008. This was published on the official Weinstein Company website.
The final release date was pushed to February 6, 2009.
TRIVIA:
Originally Jorge Garcia was attached to play Harry Knowles, but scheduling conflicts with Lost caused him to turn down the role. Then, Kevin Smith stepped in and was reportedly very enthusiastic, but some last-minute editing for Clerks II forced him to step down.
The scene with the Star Trek fans in full costume dedicating the Captain James T. Kirk birthplace statue as they confront the Star Wars fans was shot on location in the Town Square Park Plaza of Las Vegas, NEVADA. You can see the historic Plaza Hotel in the background in certain shots.
The passenger side door of the van has the word "fanboys" written on it in the "Star Wars" Aurebesh alphabet and mirrored.
An early promotional poster of this movie said "Coming To Our Galaxy in 2007". It was never released that year.
The movement that opposed Harvey Weinstein's cut of the movie was called the Stop Darth Weinstein campaign
The additional shots made in November and December 2007, weren't done by original director Kyle Newman but by Steven Brill.
BIOGRAPHY OF SAM HUNTINGTON:
Sam Huntington was born in Peterborough, New Hampshire, on April 1, 1982. His father is a cabinet maker and owns his own business. His mother is an actress on stage and screen (most famously in Knots Landing).
She also is a teacher, writer, and currently serves as Sam's manager.
Sam began acting at the age of 9 under the direction of his mother as a part of her children's theater, The Black Box.
Sam was also a part of Andy's Summer Playhouse in Wilton for three summers and performed at Franklin Pierce College in Rindge.
His professional acting career began at the celebrated Peterborough Players in Peterborough where he was cast in four major productions from 1991 to 1994, his favorite being Jem in To Kill a Mockingbird.
Although Sam wanted to begin screen acting right away, his mother encouraged him to gain more experience. In 1995, Sam signed with the JM Bloom Agency in New York City.
Sam and his mother moved to an apartment there for a year, and Sam attended 7th grade at The Professional Children's School, where he became friends with Macaulay Culkin.
During this year, Sam was cast in three television commercials, a voice-over for The Magic School Bus, an instructional video for the Windows 95 computer operating system, the Hallmark Hall of Fame presentation of Harvest of Fire, and in the Winona Ryder film Boys, but his scenes in the latter were edited out.
Sam also signed a three-movie contract with the Walt Disney Company; the first film under this contract was in the key role of Mimi-Siku in the hit comedy Jungle 2 Jungle, which also starred Tim Allen.
Filming for that picture began in April 1996 and lasted about 3 months.
It was filmed entirely on location in New York City; Pound Ridge, NY; and Canaima National Park in Venezuela. During this time, Sam was accompanied by his mother (and often his father and sister) and had a tutor who kept him up on his 8th-grade studies.
Sam also had a guest appearance on the award-winning television show Law & Order in December 1997.
More recently, Sam starred in the ensemble comedy Not Another Teen Movie, the teen movie Sleepover, and the anticipated smash Superman Returns.

Sam began his career on stage, at age nine, at the prestigious Peterborough Players, in his native New Hampshire, where he performed over four seasons, in such roles as Jem in To Kill A Mockingbird, opposite James Rebhorn. Huntington will next star in Bryan Singer's Superman Returns for Warner Bros.
