STORYLINE:
In everyone's life there's that one person who makes all the difference.
William Hundert (Kevin Mine), St. Benedict's assistant headmaster, practices what he teaches. Striving to inspire his students to live rightly, he's the kind of impassioned, principled Classics professor who believes the history of the Greeks and Romans is more than just a lesson about the past. He also believes that the role of a teacher is not only to educate the pupil but to mold the pupil's character.
But in the fall of '72, Hundert finds his cloistered world of tradition and influence upended with the arrival of new freshman Sedgewick Bell (Emile Hirsch), the son of a West Virginia senator. Almost immediately, teacher and student become embroiled in a turbulent battle of wills with repercussions that would still be felt a quarter of a century later. Openly defying the hallowed hall's well-worn rules and challenging Hundert's authority, Sedgewick is an instant magnet for his classmates with his charisma and confidence. No pupil before him would ever have the nerve to go skinny-dipping with residents of the Girls school across the lake, nor lead his classmates in a perfectly timed slam of their textbooks.
Nor dare to blaspheme Hundert's revered ancient Emperors by likening them to the Seven Dwarfs and The Beatles. And yet, a desperate visit with Sedgewick's busy and equally strong-willed father convinces Hundert that he and his problem student share a common bond that makes it impossible for him to give up on the boy. Determined to find a way to reach Sedgewick, Hundert unsettles him by offering a friendly truce. After a noticeable change in Sedgewick's attitude, Hundert slowly begins to bend his rules in order to win Sedgewick's trust. An impromptu baseball game becomes a bonding experience for the two. Soon one compromise on Hundert's part begets another ... and then another ... and it's not long before the teacher's noble efforts to mold the student's character are in fact, having a more profound effect on his own. Faced with a King Solomon decision that would determine Sedgewick's fate, as well as the destiny of others, Hundert, for all the right reasons, finds himself making a choice that would haunt him for the next 25 years of his life.
BIOGRAPHY OF EMILE HIRSCH:
Emile Davenport Hirsch (born March 13, 1985) is an American television and film actor. He began acting in the late 1990s, appearing in several television films and series, and became known as a film actor after roles in 2002's The Emperor's Club and 2004's The Girl Next Door, among others. Hirsch is slated to appear in several upcoming films, including Alpha Dog and Into the Wild.
Hirsch was born in Topanga, California to David Hirsch, an industrial consultant, and Margaret Davenport, a pop-up book artist; his parents are now divorced and he lives with his father. He has an older sister, Jenny, who is also an actress. Hirsch attended Paul Revere Middle School and the Academy of Music at Alexander Hamilton High School in Los Angeles; he is good friends with actor Andrew Keegan. Hirsch began acting in the late 1990s, appearing in many minor roles on television shows or made-for-television films, including Kindred: the Embraced, 3rd Rock from the Sun, Sabrina, the Teenage Witch and NYPD Blue. He made his film debut with the 2002 drama, The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys, where he starred opposite Kieran Culkin in the story of two Catholic school boys. His next role was in the prep school drama, The Emperor's Club, which was released later in 2002. Both films received generally positive reviews, but performed only moderately at the box office.
Hirsch was subsequently cast opposite Elisha Cuthbert in the 2004 teen comedy, The Girl Next Door, and as a result gained renown among teenage audiences. The Mudge Boy, an independent film that he had starred in before making Girl Next Door, was given a limited release in the summer of 2004. Hirsch next appeared in Imaginary Heroes, a drama about a dysfunctional family, which received a limited release in February 2005 but failed to reach a wider audience, despite mostly positive reviews. In 2005, Hirsch starred in Lords of Dogtown; the film, about a number of well-known skaters of the 1970s, was released on June 3, 2005, but it ultimately performed poorly at the box office. Hirsch's next role will be in Alpha Dog, a dark drama about drug dealer Jesse James Hollywood; the film is scheduled to be released on January 12, 2007. Hirsch has also been cast as adventurer Christopher McCandless in the Sean Penn-directed drama Into the Wild.
