TRIVIA:

2006 Sundance closing film.

To prepare for his role in this movie, actor Ben Foster asked one of his friends who was an ex-crystal meth addict for guidance.

The friend introduced him to a group of people who gave Foster an all-access pass into the lifestyle.

When Wanda Haynes (Heather Wahlquist) screams "Heil" in Jake Mazursky's (Ben Foster) apartment, the entire part was improvised. When done with the line, the cast went along with it, and then director, Nick Cassavetes kept it in the film.

Ben Foster risked his sight for the movie by adding glaucoma drops to his eyes for much of the shoot to dilate his pupils, making him appear to be high.

He'd hide in the bushes at night and cover his eyes between takes to keep the lights from shining into them. He would also talk to Nick Cassavetes with his eyes closed.

The tattoo encircling Jake Mazursky's (Ben Foster) neck is the original Hebrew verse from Psalms 109:14, "Let not the sin of his mother be blotted out".

The film begins with actual home video of some of the cast members when they were children. Anton Yelchin (Zack Mazursky) is the last child shown.

The word "fuck" and its derivatives is said 367 times.

In a scene where they have a fight, Sharon Stone hit Ben Foster so hard that his nose started bleeding. He told her to do so, because he said the scene needed to be as realistic as possible.

During filming, Santa Barbara County Deputy District Attorney Ronald J. Zonen provided copies of virtually every document in his file on the real life case and served as an unpaid consultant to the film.

The end credits state that Johnny Truelove was caught by Interpol in Asunción, Paraguay on Wednesday, August 10, 2005.

His real life counterpart, Jesse James Hollywood was actually caught in Saquarema, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on Tuesday, March 8, 2005, at 11:35am.

During this capture scene at the end of the movie, the popular Garota de Ipanema song is played, giving a clear hint of where he was located.

In another scene at the end of the movie when Johnny Truelove is running away, the background song is a song by "Eminem" titled "Say Goodbye Hollywood" in which Hollywood is the name of the real suspect that Truelove's character portrays "Jesse James Hollywood."

Given that the film is set in 1999, there are minor anachronisms. For example, Frankie and Keith can be seen playing an Xbox in one scene; a video game console which wasn't released until 2001.

Another examples include a 2003 Land Rover Discovery and a 2001+ GMC Yukon Denali appearing in the film.

There is also a scene where Frankie is playing a 2 player game with his "stoner" friend. When the television comes into shot, the game is clearly one player.

RECEPTION:

During its opening weekend, Alpha Dog grossed $6,412,775 and was in 7th at the box office. The film closed on February 22, 2007 after grossing $15.2 million domestically, and totaled $30,774,935 worldwide over its six week release.

The film has a score of 56% on rottentomatoes.com the consensus being, "a glossy yet unflinching portrait of violent, hedonistic teenagers.

Bruce Willis and Sharon Stone chew the scenery, while Justin Timberlake gives a noteworthy performance." Up-and-comer Anton Yelchin is praised as "able to bring all of the conflicting emotions of Zack," and conveying all of it beautifully.

Alpha Dog was released on DVD on May 1, 2007. It includes a DVD/HD DVD combo package where both forms are included in one box.

PLOT:

Alpha Dog is inspired by the true story of Jesse James Hollywood, a mid-level drug dealer from the San Gabriel Valley whose thirst for power led him to become the youngest man ever to appear on the FBIs Most Wanted list.

Emile Hirsch stars as teenage suburban drug dealer Johnny Truelove, an ambitious young man whose lifestyle is a mecca for guns, sex and drugs.

When a client cheats Johnny and a deal goes bad, he devises a plan to get his money back by kidnapping the clients younger brother.

But things take an unexpected twist as Johnny and his crew get caught up in the dangerous and violent world they once idealized.

REWVIEW:

ALPHA DOG is a strong film that reminded me of a film called BULLY that was similar, but not given much publicity.

ALPHA DOG seemed to me to be a more commercial film that got more publicity and had big stars like Bruce Willis & Sharon Stone giving it clout.

That isn't a bad thing. ALPHA DOG is a frightening film based on a true story and its greatest gift is its closeness to reality and how kids go through life thinking with blinders on. They don't see the big picture.

They don't realize the consequences of their actions from minute to minute. Everything we do has an effect and repercussions.

Teenagers have an aura of invincibility. In the case of ALPHA DOG, we get to see those aura's exposed.
