| Matthew McLaren (GENE PATRICK) is a carefree New York college student wrongly implicated in the murder of a friend, who is hunted by drug dealers. Frightened and desperate, Matthew escapes to Switzerland, becoming the object of an international manhunt. Enroute to Geneva, Matthew meets Maria-Helena Buffington (AURORE CLEMENT) 35, the aristocratic and dissatisfied wife of a U.S. Senator. Maria-Helena introduces Matthew to the fast life of the international set and the two begin a passionate affair. But Matthew is forced to flee again, when the police track him to a glamorous nightclub and a frantic chase ensues. Matthew meets Thomas Fassler (THOMAS NOCK) a Swiss farm boy, whose family welcomes the American "cowboy" on holiday. Thomas' innocence, enthusiasm and love of nature are very endearing to Matthew, who has grown up among steel skyscrapers and city danger. The two young men set out to find adventure, first in St. Moritz, where they join Maria-Helena, and later in the glamorous party life of Mykonos, where Thomas learns the reason behind Matthew's flight from New York. While the police are closing in, we realize that Matthew and Thomas share a destiny that is fatefully charged with mystery and jeopardy. | THE MYTH in English: The story of the fateful friendship which binds together two young men is at the heart of Jaques Sandoz' GEMINI, THE TWIN STARS. The inspiration for this story came from the ancient Greek myth of Castor and Pollux. As the story goes, the beautiful Leda had two sons. Pollux was born of her union with the god, Jupiter who had seduced her in the guise of a swan. Castor was fathered by an earthly king. Each brother displayed separate aspects of their shared heritage. Castor - represented in the film as the American, Matthew McLaren - was earthbound and mortal, while his brother, Pollux - the Swiss farmboy, Thomas Fassler - was the divine sibling. The myth has it that Castor was famous for his skill at managing horses, and Pollux for his prowess at boxing. The two were also skillful warriors, renown for their heroism and bravery displayed on the field of battle. In the war with Idas and Lynceux, Pollux was slain and Castor, alone for the first time in his life, was inconsolable. Castor pleaded with Jupiter to bring Pollux back to life. Touched by the young man's devotion to his beloved brother, Jove granted Castor the intent of his wish. He reunited the two young men, not as mortals, but as heavenly bodies, becoming Gemini, the Twin Stars. From their home in the constellations, Castor and Pollux were able to watch over Man's destiny and shine together through eternity. Jaques Sandoz new film, GEMINI, THE TWIN STARS, takes the essence of the story of Castor and Pollux and places it in the modern world. Sandoz' is the first film based on this famous Greek myth. |
| DER MYTHOS in German: Der Freundschaft zwischen zwei Jugendlichen, die im Mittelpunkt von Jaques Sandoz neuem Film GEMINI, THE TWIN STARS, steht, liegt die griechische Sage von Castor und Pollux zugrunde. Nach der Legende waren Castor und Pollux zwei Zwillingsbrüder, die aus der Liebe zwischen einer Sterblichen, Leda, und dem König von Sparta, für den einen, bzw. Zeus für den anderen hervorgegangen sind. Obwohl die Brüder Zwillinge sind, entwickeln sie sich sehr unterschiedlich. Castor - in diesem Film der Amerikaner Matthew McLaren - ist ein Erdenbewohner und daher sterblich, während sein Bruder Pollux - der junge Bauernsohn Thomas Fässler - dem Geschlecht der Götter angehört. Castor soll ein grosser Pferdedresseur gewesen sein, Pollux ein berühmter Boxer. Beide waren mutige Krieger, die wegen ihres Heroismus auf den Schlachtfeldern berühmt waren. Als Pollux in der Schlacht im Kampf gegen die Argonauten fällt, ist Castor, der zum ersten Male im Leben von seinem Zwillingsbruder getrennt wird, untröstlich. Er fleht Zeus an, seinen Bruder wieder zum Leben zu erwecken. Zeus ist über die Anhänglichkeit des jungen Mannes gerührt und erfüllt seinen Wunsch. Er vereint die beiden jungen Leute wieder, jedoch nicht in ihrer sterblichen Hülle, sondern in göttlicher Gestalt: als Zwillingssterne, als Sterne des Sternzeichens der Zwillinge. Castor und Pollux wachen vom Firmament über das Geschick der Menschen und leuchten für die Ewigkeit. | LE MYTHE in French: L'amitié entre deux jeunes hommes, élément central du nouveau film de Jaques Sandoz, GEMINI, THE TWIN STARS, s'inspire du mythe grec de Castor et Pollux. Le mythe veut que Castor et Pollux aient été deux frères jumeaux, nés des amours entre une mortelle, Léda et le roi de Sparte, pour l'un alors que l'autre était le fils de Zeus. Bien que jumeaux, les deux frères se développent différemment.
